Doppler ultrasonography in rheumatoid arthritis therapy monitoring

چکیده
Within the last decade, musculoskeletal ultrasonography is playing an increasingly important role in the evaluation and monitoring of patients with chronic infl ammatory arthritis. High-resolution musculoskeletal ultrasonography allows direct assessment of intra-articular and periarticular infl ammatory activity and structural damage in infl ammatory arthritis. There have been a growing number of studies on the criterion and construct validity of ultrasonography with color Doppler or power Doppler techniques for evaluating infl ammatory activity in rheumatoid arthritis. Ultrasonography has been proven to be more sensitive and reproducible than clinical evaluation in assessing rheumatoid joint infl ammation. Recent studies have demonstrated the responsiveness of grayscale and Doppler parameters in the monitoring of response to therapy in patients with rheumatoid arthritis.

Three-dimensional power Doppler sonography in short-term therapy monitoring of rheumatoid synovitis.
SIR, Ultrasound (US) is an invaluable tool in the assessment of the expression of the inflammatory process since it is able to detect minimal amounts of fluid collection, synovial proliferation and bone erosion. Moreover, coupling grey-scale and power Doppler sonography (PDS) it is also possible to evaluate soft tissue perfusion. This kind of information can play a key role in shortterm therapy...

AIM To monitor joint inflammation and destruction in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients receiving adalimumab/methotrexate combination therapy using MRI and ultrasonography. To assess the predictive value of MRI and ultrasonography for erosive progression on CT and compare MRI/ultrasonography/radiography for erosion detection/monitoring. METHODS Fifty-two erosive biological-naive RA patients w...
متن کاملVEGF and imaging of vessels in rheumatoid arthritis
Angiogenesis is a prominent feature of rheumatoid synovitis. Formation of new blood vessels permits a supply of nutrients and oxygen to the augmented inflammatory cell mass and so contributes to perpetuation of joint disease. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is a potent endothelial cell-specific growth factor that is upregulated by proinflammatory cytokines and by hypoxia. Serum VEGF c...
متن کاملQuantitative ultrasonography in rheumatoid arthritis: evaluation of inflammation by Doppler technique.
OBJECTIVE To evaluate ultrasonographic methods, including the Doppler technique, as measures of synovial inflammation in finger joints of patients with rheumatoid arthritis. METHODS Ultrasonography was performed with a high frequency transducer (13 MHz). Evaluation of the sonographic data was conducted by two independent observers and included measurement of synovial area and thickness (grey ...
متن کاملDoppler ultrasonography for assessing rheumatoid arthritis Review
Doppler ultrasound is able to visualize blood flow by the change in frequency (Doppler shift) of sound waves that are reflected by moving blood cells inside the vessels (Doppler effect). Since hyperemia caused by vasodilation and angiogenesis can be the earliest detectable pathologic changes in the beginning of synovitis, Doppler ultrasonography can be used to assess inflammatory activity. In a...
